The word Quaich is taken from the Gealic word "cuach" meaning shallow cup and Quaichs were used for drinking spirits such as whisky and brandy. The earliest quaichs were made from staved wood bound with willow and decorated with silver panels. They were later made from horn or leather. Quaichs are used all over Scotland but have come to be associated with the Highlands. The largest quaiches were handed round at gatherings when toasting a special occasion.
The quaich, Scotland's CUP OF FRIENDSHIP, has been used through the centuries to offer a welcoming drink at Clan Gatherings, and other family occasions, and to friends and visitors.
